Get ready to Go Blue !

Stormwater runoff is the #1 cause of pollution in our lakes, rivers and streams. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency estimates 40% of our waterways are impaired, and that's bad news for a state that loves its 10,000 lakes! Good news is, there are "many small things" regular folks can do to reduce this damage!

Neighbors in the Diamond Lake watershed of south Minneapolis decided to do "many small things" about the problem. They learned that if they could get the first inch of rain (most of our rainfalls are less than 1") to soak into our properties instead of running down the street into storm drains, they could prevent a lot of pollutants from entering the lake. Through a program managed by Hedberg Landscape & Masonry Supplies and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, and led by Friends of Diamond Lake and Hale Page Diamond Lake, residents received stormwater education and 34 households worked with contractors to install a mix of permeable paver driveways, walkways and patios, planted raingardens, trees, hooked up rain barrels, and installed 1,000 to 1,500 gallon RainXchange rainwater harvesting systems. Cost share grant assistance was provided through the Clean Water Legacy Fund.

Continuing outreach efforts include marking storm drains so everyone knows they connect to the lake and not to dump things into them.

Just like we no longer throw trash out the windows of our cars, and look for places to recycle empty pop cans and bottles, we can develop new behaviors to reduce storm water pollution. Do you know where the water in your neighborhood goes once it flows into a storm drain? Visit your city website and find out. It's probably a nearby pond or lake. And anything that goes down that storm drain - grass clippings, fretilizer, trash, automotive fluids, paint - ends up in that pond or lake. From there it flows to a larger water body, possibly ultimately to the Mississippi river. Anything we let go down the storm drain can end up in the Gulf of Mexico!
